This tutorial shows how to replace the worn hood lift assemblies on a 98 Lexus LS400. Total time is about 15 minutes.

New lifts: StrongArm

These are the new gas charged lift supports called "StrongArm".
They are made by AVM Industries in Marion, SC.
MADE IN USA.

Purchased at Advance Auto ($64 for the pair)

Poor man's hood lift

I cut a piece of scrap oak to hold the hood while I worked. You could also use a helper but I was fresh out of them at the time.

Remove upper ball stud

Use an open end 12mm wrench to unscrew and remove the upper lift
ball stud.

Remove lower ball stud

Do the same removal for the lower stud. Then just remove the entire lift support.
Repeat the process for the driver's side strut.

Old and new

The old Toyota lift is shown at the bottom. Same overall length as the new StrongArm supports.

New ball studs

The StrongArm kit comes with 4 new ball studs. These thread right into the hood where the old lift stud was. Snug them up but dont overdue it. Remember to put the washer on the stud.

New lift installed

With the new ball studs in place and tightened, just snap each end of the new StrongArm lift into the studs, top and bottom. Very simple and straightforward.
