It's a good idea to replace your distributors and rotors while doing a tune up, or timing belt change since many parts have already been removed. Replacing these parts may also help if you're experiencing starting problems. There is a procedure for this in the repair manual but it leaves out many parts that need to be removed. The parts that need to be removed are almost exactly the same as in the timing belt tutorial so I'm just going to follow that and note the steps you'll need to follow.

Tools Needed:

  • Sockets, socket wrenches
  • Torque wrench for in-lb

Parts/Supplies Needed:

  • 2 distributors
  • 2 distributor rotors


1) Drain engine coolant from radiator . Basically you only need to drain the radiator and make sure the overflow tank is empty.

2) Disconnect battery, remove fan, remove drive belt, and engine covers.  Your distributors and rotors should now be removed.

4) Install the distributor rotors. Align the protrusion of the rotor with the groove of the camshaft timing pulley. Torque the 2 bolts to 34 in-lb (39 kg-cm, 3.8 Nm)

5) Install the two distributor caps. Each cap has 3 bolts, torque the bolts to 34 in-lb (39 kg-cm, 3.8 Nm).

6) Remaining install is reverse of removal.
