One of the more expensive repairs on an LS is the dreaded upper control arms (UCA's). The main symptom is a loud clunk when going over small bumps. I know first hand you don't want to hear your UCA's need to be replaced. Before I was working on my car I had these replaced along with several other front suspension components. It was pricey, about $1000 just for the UCA's with an independent mechanic, my local dealer wanted about $1400 for the job! The bulk of the cost comes with the parts. If you buy online you should be able to buy both UCA's for ~$600. The good news is that you can do this job yourself with a few basic tools. I certainly wish I had this info a few years ago because I know I could have saved hundreds of dollars....live and learn!

Tools Needed:

  • Breaker bar or impact wrench
  • 17mm socket & socket wrench
  • Torque wrench

Parts/Supplies Needed:

  • Three or four feet of rope or wire
  • Upper control arms


1) Remove the front shocks

 

2) With the shocks removed, retie the rope for the steering knuckle to something solid above. I had a long rope and just pulled it through and tied it to the tie down ring in the front.

 

3) Remove the two 17mm bolts and set the upper arm aside. Torque = 83 ft-lb (113 Nm).

 

Front upper suspension arm with factory bushings. This arm is about 2.5 years old and is quite an expensive part ~ $400 list each. Unfortunately you have to buy the entire assembly if the ball joint is damaged, so be carefull with the ball joint! There are several alternatives available for the bushings though.

4) Install is reverse of removal.
