Things You'll Need:

  • Lug wrench
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stand
  • Wrench set
  • Ratchet and socket set
  • 2 Self-locking nuts

The struts on your Nissan 300ZX may be replaced as a complete assembly. Years of service weaken the coil spring, and the center strut piston may begin to leak, providing a rough ride on rugged terrain or irregular pavement on the road. However, you can replace the struts on your Nissan yourself. Once you have the correct replacement, follow these steps.

Replace the struts on your Nissan 300ZX

Removing the Strut Assembly

  • 1

Loosen the lugs on the front wheel with the strut you need to replace using a lug wrench.

  • 2

Raise the front wheel using a floor jack and safely support it on a jack stand.

  • 3

    Remove the front wheel.

  • 4

Set up and raise the floor jack under the lower arm connected to the steering knuckle, behind the wheel assembly, to use as support after you remove the strut assembly.

  • 5

Unscrew the nut from the strut-to-steering knuckle bracket using a wrench or ratchet and socket.

  • 6

Open the hood and unscrew the two strut upper mounting nuts using a wrench or ratchet and socket. Make sure not to disconnect the upper center nut, which holds the coil spring to the strut piston under pressure.

  • 7

Unplug the actuator of the electrical connector if your particular 300ZX model uses an adjustable or sonar suspension shock.

  • 8

Lower the jack supporting the lower arm very slowly until you can remove the strut assembly off the vehicle.

  • Installing the Strut Assembly

  • 1

Set the new strut assembly in place and, using two new self-locking nuts, start the two upper mounting nuts by hand.

  • 2

Connect the strut-to-steering knuckle bracket and start the mounting nut by hand.

  • 3

Tighten the two upper mounting nuts.

  • 4

Tighten the mounting nut on the strut-to-steering knuckle bracket.

  • 5

Plug the actuator electrical connector if your particular 300ZX model uses an adjustable or sonar suspension shock.

  • 6

Mount the tire on the wheel/hub assembly and install the wheel lugs.

  • 7

Lower the vehicle and finish tightening the wheel lugs.

  • 8

Replace the other front strut assembly, if necessary, following the above procedure.

  • 9

Take the car to an automotive wheel alignment shop for check and adjustment if necessary.
