Mod: Interior Dash Repaint

Modification Type:
Appearance/Electronics

Difficulty of Install/Modification:
Easy But Laborous

Preparation And Install Time:
12-14 hours

Changing the color of the interior isn't as easy as one might guess, but the work behind it can be mundane and very tedious.  I recommend that you do each part of the dash on separate days since removing everything off can get very annoying.  Here's what the interior looks like before actual removal.  Make sure you have a three sandpaper types (80 grit, 200, grit, 1000 grit), a Thick Primer Spraypaint (preferrably Duplicolor), Hi temp spray paint (preferrably Duplicolor as well), and a flat/phillips screwdriver.

To begin, we'll begin examining the interior dash of the car.  Below is the driver side

...the passenger side...

 ...and the center console.

These are the main parts of the dash that we will be concentrating.  We want to give a new look for the dash and center...but not overkill the whole look of the color change as most other cars have.  Can't wait to get rid of the grey dull color.

First thing's first.  We'll start with the easiest parts to remove.  In this case, it'll be the small vent on the passenger side of the dash.  Use a flat screwdriver on this.

The second part will be the center vents.  Use a flat screw driver to carefully pry it out.  Pry from the right side.  You will have to remove the harnass wires from the clock and the hazard button.

The next thing is the glove compartment.  Open the glove compartment to expose the screw openings.  I highly recommend that you unscrew the bottom parts of the compartment before you do the top.  Once the compartment loosens, you will need to be very careful in not breaking it away from the rest of the dash.  Pretty fragile for a compartment.  You will then need to be very careful with the wires that are atttached to the speakers.  You might also want to remove whatever is in the compartment for good measure.  Here's a shot of the removal:

From this point you will also want to remove the adjustable vent on the passenger side.  It will probably be harder to pry...but it shouldn't be too much trouble.

The next part is the center console.  Remove the screws on the side.  You will then have to remove the rug cover inside the arm rest/center console to expose the rest of the screws.  Carefully remove and it  should look like this (note the crappy seats):

Note above that you can't remove the radio/shift console yet until you remove this part:

Of course, when you try to remove it you realize that the hood latch is still attached to it.  You're going to have to go under and remove these screws as shown below:

If you are already reading this part of the article, you should have finished taking out the left cover under the steering wheel.  The next thing to do is remove the steering column cover.  (no picture shown since the screws are obviously located under the steering wheel...piece of cake).

The first thing you need to do is fill the sink up with hot water and place the duplicolor spray like this.  This prevents the paint from "spitting" out the paint.  By doing this, you get a consistent and a nice thin layer of paint every time you spray.

While the spray is being warmed up, you should start laying out the parts that you took off.  With everything off, you should see a set of parts that look like this:

And the inside of the interior should look like this:

Then I start sanding some of the scratches that were made during the existence of my celica.  This is the part that took most of my time.  The sanding part was usually the longest part of this project.  Of course, you should make sure you use the roughest sandpaper first and the most finest paper last.

Center Arm Console

As well as the paper/protectant/separator I had to make for each of the plastic parts.  I did not want to spray the vents or go through the trouble of removing them.  Plus it would be hard to place the vents back in without scratching the newly sprayed paint.  So I just used paper in its most creative fashion...

And so here are the rest of the other parts that were sanded and sprayed:

Center console

...I sprayed a whole bunch of other stuff as well but for the sake of brevity I will not show all the parts.  There was one more part I almost forgot to mention.  I went the extra mile and decided to remove the mirror arm and spray that as well.

With all the parts painted,  there was another touch I decided to add to the left side of the dash.  A cell phone holder by Razo.  I thought it would give it a more practical look.  So first I drilled/dremeled my hole...

With the drilling done, I slided the bolt onto the back of cell phone holder.  I found the perfect bolt for this.

Then bolt the thing on using the nut behind the panel...

and voila.. A built-in cell holder...

Once this was done I was ready to start reinstalling the pieces of the interior.  The first thing that needs to go in first is the shift/center console as shown below.

After that.  You're pretty much set in terms of which piece you want to do next.  Don't forget to reinstall the harnesses on your ash tray, clock, hazard light, glove compartment light.  Here is the resulting and remarkable finish:
